新加坡在前總理李光耀的帷幄運籌下快速騰飛，成為全球貿易與金融重鎮，但其鐵腕治理也惹來不少批評，尤其在人短期留學 英文 暑假遊學團權保障方面，許多經典的「李語錄」，皆引人爭議。
新加坡懲治貪腐的成果一直為他國所稱羨，但嚴刑峻法的手段也備受質疑，許多國際組織都曾經要求新加坡政府廢除「鞭刑」，但新加坡仍將其視為管制社會治安的利器。
李光耀在回憶錄《風雨獨立路》中談到他的法治思想，他說：「日本軍管政府的統治方式讓你不寒而慄，嚴懲使犯罪活動幾乎絕跡。有人主張對待和懲罰罪犯應該從寬，認為刑罰減少不了犯罪，我從不相信這一套。」
他也說過：「我們必須把人關起來，不經審判……不那樣做，國家就會一團亂。」而在對媒體和外國出版品進行限制時，李光耀則強調，「出版、新聞自由必須服從於使新加坡完整」。他說鐵腕管制完全是正當的，因為「報紙受到了外國敵對利益的資助」。
此外，李光耀擔心中國崛起成為主要威脅，但又擔心共產黨喪失政權而陷入動盪。在《海峽時報》2004年的報導中，李光耀轉而認同鄧小平在六四事件的處理稱：「如果殺20萬學生能避免百年動亂，那就這樣吧。」
在外界眼中，新加坡的有序、發展固然可羨，但以人權、民主、自由為代價，讓李光耀的功與過，直至蓋棺仍難以定論。
